Syn-Aud-Con's Philosophy

We exchanged dollars
We each had a dollar

I met a man with an idea
We exchanged ideas
Now we each have two ideas

Syn-Aud-Con Today:

Syn-Aud-Con is headed up by Pat Brown, who was founder Don Davis's teaching assistant when the Syn-Aud-Con seminars were run by Don and Carolyn Davis. Pat and his wife Brenda took over Syn-Aud-Con in 1996 when the Davis' retired.

Pat Brown is a contractor/consultant who has designed and installed sound systems for all types of venues, from small churches to large arenas. Pat teaches Syn-Aud-Con seminars world-wide, authors magazine articles, and conducts training seminars for major manufacturers.

Pat's wife, Brenda, manages the office, co-edits the Syn-Aud-Con Newsletter and coordinates Syn-Aud-Con activities.

Pat and Brenda are dedicated to building upon the foundation that Don and Carolyn laid, carrying Syn-Aud-Con into the 21st century.

More about founders Don & Carolyn Davis:

Syn-Aud-Con was founded by Don and Carolyn Davis, both Fellows of the Audio Engineering Society. Don had been Vice President at Klipsch & Associates, followed by being Vice President at Altec Lansing. In December 1972 Don left Altec and by May 1973, Don and Carolyn had written the 1st Edition of "Sound System Engineering."

Previous to this, Don had written "Acoustical Tests & Measurements" (1964), "How to Build Speaker Enclosures" (1966) with Alex Badmaieff, and also published a multitdue of technical articles and AES papers.

"If Bad Sound Were Fatal, Audio Would be the Leading Cause of Death" by Don & Carolyn Davis was published in 2004.

Many practices in our industry have been influenced by Don and Carolyn, such as:

  • The Use of Directivity Factor, Q
  • The 1/3 Octave Equalizer
  • 1/3 Octave Real-Time Analysis, and TEF Analysis in connection with the legendary Richard Heyser
  • In-The-Ear Microphony
  • Live-End-Dead-End Listening Rooms
  • Progress in Speech Intelligibility, particulary its measurement
  • Quantifying Acoustic Gain
  • Acoustic Test and Measurements written in 1964
  • The Design of Acoustic Parameter Programs for Computer-Calculators (still used largely intact in today's computer programs)

The 3rd Edition of "Sound System Engineering" revised by Don and Dr. Eugene Patronis, professor Emeritus of Physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, is now available.

The Davis' are retired and live in Casa Grande, AZ.

A great course! I wished I had done these years ago. It clarified and reinforced methodology I use every day.
