Sound Reinforcement For Designers Course Overview
Integrate the art and science of room acoustics with sound system design
A sound system is no better than the room that it is placed in. This course is designed to emphasize the codependency of room acoustics and sound system design. Our mantra for this course is Listen - Measure - Predict
Days one and two cover the measurement of the acoustic characteristics of enclosed spaces. The course is built around the acquisition and interpretation of the room impulse or RIR, using it to derive all the room metrics of interest to sound system designers. Topics like convolution demonstrate how to integrate listening into the evaluation process.
Attendees need to bring a personal computer to do the exercises (click here for software requirements). The room measurements are distributed on CD, and can be opened with any measurement program that supports .wav files.
Days three and four outline and demonstrate an efficient, accurate sound system design process that includes listening, measurement and prediction.
Although Core Principles of Audio and Sound Reinforcement for Technicians are not required course prerequisites, they provide a beneficial structure to build upon. Sound Reinforcement for Designers assumes a knowledge level consistent with completion of these courses.

What Will You Learn? How to perform room acoustics measurements quickly and accurately. How to do this with or without computers. How to process the measured data to determine the reverb time, clarity, frequency response and speech intelligibility. Sound system design techniques that are driven by the room acoustics data. The proper use of loudspeaker ratings such as sensitivity, impedance, power handling, directivity and others. How to calculate how much SPL that a loudspeaker will produce at any distance, with any amount of applied power, and how to know whether the result will meet a performance specification. How to use room modeling software as an extension of the thought process to speed up the design process. How to get the right loudspeaker in the right place the first time around - no more “redo’s” of poorly performing sound systems. Cost: $1,100 |
